ZO Skin Health’s core routine

ZO Skin Health is the leading physician-dispensed skincare brand that everyone is talking about.

The brand was founded by dermatologist DR Zein Obagi, who remains very active with his medical team in developing his range of ground breaking products in California. He specialises in skin health rejuvenation, using a trusted system he developed in over 30 years ago. ZO products are exceptional in their science and formulations to target acne, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage,  age spots and redness and have become firm favourites amongst clients.

The ZO range is available only through carefully selected skin clinics, where the doctors are fully-trained in the products and protocols. The range is available post-consultation for this reason, as part of our three-step “Getting Skin Ready” system.

What is the 3 step Getting Skin Ready system?

The first steps in transforming your skin literally involve getting your skin ready, which we call GSR. These essential steps are cleansing, exfoliating and controlling dry or oilier skin in that order. This 3 step system alone helps to eliminate skin sensitivity, restore hydration and improve skin health. It is fundamental to any ZO routine.

It works on the principle that skin should be restored from within. Let’s first take a look at our skin’s processes. Our skin undergoes a constant repair and renew process, a continual cycle that starts from a baby cell in the deepest skin layers.

It rises to reach the skin’s surface, a process that takes 4-6 weeks on average. The optimal skin cycle takes up to six weeks. However, everyday factors, including hormones, our diet, the weather and the environment, slow the process down.

Even using mismatched products can affect the process – and as a result, our skin can lose its optimal skin renewal processes. This shows in its appearance.

The skin’s surface may look dull, suffer a loss of resilience, a build-up of dead skin cells and clogged pores. Surface debris from the environment and dead skin cells can have a highly detrimental effect on our skin.

To achieve optimum skin health and maintain its appearance, we need to remove all surface debris. This is where the ZO system comes in. It works on the principle of cleansing and exfoliating to remove dead cells, both from the overnight process and those that build up throughout the day.

The 3 step system is highly effective in hydrating the skin, minimising the appearance of pores, controlling oil on the surface and improving skin health.

Our customised ZO routines  are loved by users, with the Getting Skin Ready system improving roughness in 73% of patients. In addition, 69% of patients say it improves oiliness, 62% find it improves dullness and 60% find it improves redness.

What are the 3 steps in the GSR system?

 Step 1 Cleansing

There is a specific cleanser in the ZO range best suited to your skin type. This forms the first step of the GSR system. It is important to cleanse both morning and night. Cleansing will also expose the new healthy skin cells coming through whilst removing the dead cells and debris from the skin surface.  Exfoliating gently removes dead cells on the skin’s surface and also stimulates a faster cell turnover. In the evening it is important to double cleanse to remove any make up residue or sunscreen residue.

Step 2 Exfoliate

The second step is exfoliating, a gentle and effective way of removing dead skin cells, allowing for better penetration for the next products in your ZO routine. This also stimulates your circulation, giving your skin a smooth, healthy glow.

Step 3 Control

The final step in the GSR system. Control, delivers key ingredients depending on your specific skin concerns, these ingredients  combat dryness, control breakouts, balance skin and lift pigmentation. This is the key step to address specific skin conditions. It is most effective after your skin has been prepared with steps one and two – ZO cleanse and exfoliator – first.

Our doctors highly recommend using a customised 3 step ZO system suitable for your skin type to achieve optimum results:
